The word 4K is doing a great deal of unearned work across this industry, because nothing stops a provider labelling an upscaled 1080p stream as Ultra HD. What matters is the source and the bitrate. On a 55-inch screen or larger, watching sport or film, 4K earns its bandwidth. On a phone, a tablet or a small television it does not: HD looks materially identical at that size and consumes roughly a quarter of the data. Most players will tell you, if you know where to look. TiViMate and IPTV Smarters both expose stream information showing resolution and bitrate on the current channel. A feed reporting 3840 x 2160 is genuine Ultra HD; one reporting 1920 x 1080 on a channel advertised as 4K is not.
Bitrate matters as much as resolution, and it is the number providers rarely mention. A 4K stream delivered at a low bitrate can look worse than a well-encoded HD one, because the extra pixels are bought at the cost of detail in anything that moves. If the numbers are available to you, a genuine 4K sports feed should be running comfortably above what the HD version uses.
This is the single most useful thing you can do during a trial if picture quality is why you are switching. It takes a minute per channel and it converts a marketing claim into a measurement.
Because a 4K stream needs roughly three to four times the bandwidth of the HD version of the same channel. If HD plays perfectly and 4K stutters, the service is working and your connection or your Wi-Fi is the constraint, which is a different problem with a different fix.
Work through it in order. Move the device onto Ethernet, since Wi-Fi is the usual culprit. Switch the player to hardware decoding. Then test the same channel at a quiet hour: if 4K is fine at midnight and unwatchable at eight, either your provider or your ISP is congested at peak, and testing on mobile data will tell you which.
Owning a 4K television is not sufficient on its own. The set needs HDMI 2.0 or better on the port you are using, and the device feeding it has to be capable of decoding 4K. An older Fire TV Stick or a budget Android box will output 1080p regardless of what the television can display.

On a screen below about 55 inches, at normal viewing distance, most people cannot reliably distinguish good HD from 4K. On a phone or a tablet the difference is essentially theoretical. In those cases HD gives you an identical experience for a quarter of the data and far fewer problems at peak hours.
